Free Antivirus, Firewall and other useful software
Recently a friend asked me for recommendations for free antivirus and anti-spyware programs for a old PC he is retrofitting for his parents. Thought I will share these links to others as well.

Antivirus:
AVG
Avira
Avast

Firewall:
Comodo
Online Armor
Zonealarm

Antispyware (haven't really found any great ones yet)
Spybot
Ad-aware
Microsoft Windows Defender(provided your version of windows is authenticated)

Others stuff you should install :
Firefox
Peerguardian 2 ;p

Any other recommendations are welcome.

1. Need so many Antivirus meh? One is enough...

2. I've come across comments complaining that ZoneAlarm is becoming bloatware (among other things) - may wish to review this recommendation :)

3. PeerGuardian is VERY important. Just remember to tweak the settings - it blocks HTTP/HTTPS access to some sites on default now.

No lah i don't mean use them all. I am only listing those antivirus programs you can use for free. Pick 1 of them and use. AVG is the least intrusive of all of them if you want to pick one.

Not sure of the latest Zonealarm, but the other 2 firewalls are good for advanced users, but not very user-friendly (read:more scary) for the regular mom and pop users because of all the pop ups they produce. Hopefully pure Zonealarm firewall is easier to use as I have remembered, but true, I haven't touched it for a long time.

Haha Peerguardian is not foolproof you know. But it helps to have 1 more layer of "defense". ;)
