Dark Days are Coming....

This is the tag line for Funcom's (makes of Age of Conan) new game, The Secret World. The trailer looks interesting.

To top it off? It is an MMORPG it seems. And its designed for the Xbox360 as well as PC.

Mario Explains It

Found a interesting new topic that started out on reddit. It started out with a relatively simple yet pretty accurate pic.

Mario Explains It. Lesson 001 (Relationships)

Then someone suggested a solution

Mario Explains It. Lesson 003 (Reality)

Being from US, other people suggested a more direct route :p

Mario Explains It: Lesson 002 -( There's always another path! )

Of course there are implications to that route.

Mario Explains It: Lesson 004b.1

Some others suggested a escape route

Mario Explains It: Lesson 006 - F*ckit! I'm outa here!

In the end. Someone just constructed the meaning of life itself from all this.

Mario Explains It: Your entire Life!

And there you have it. The cycle of life, as explained by Mario.

Life imitates games, or games imitate life? :P

Starcraft University

No wonder people like to go to US universities, this is what they teach there!

"Starcraft 101-The Art of War" at UC Berkeley

Excerpts from their syllabus:

Prerequisites:
"Starcraft: Brood War"

Course Workload:
"Each week, students must submit 2 replays of games they played and are willing to analyze in depth."

I love this module already. <3

Heck, NUS/NTU wants to be world-class universities like UC Berkeley? Then they should start offering courses like this as electives!

Local version? "The Art of Warcraft-DOTA 101"? kekekeke.....

Street Fighter IV

The new Street Fighter IV trailer looks good. The dubbing...not so good.

The anime made specially for the game looks good too.

If you can't stand the dubs, (and understand jap) here is the original Japanese version. :p

The new final boss. he's called Seth. He looks gay...

And is gay. I mean, just look at his Ultra move...

Gives a whole new meaning too "I want you inside of me...." :p

Akuma's Raging Demon is still way cooler...

And hey, it's got Sheng Long! (now known as Gouken) Don't know how he's gonna fit into the story though, since he's supposed to be dead and such. then again, video game characters never do stay dead, do they? Just look at WoW's Illidan....

Oh yeah, and there is the live action movie....

Kristen Kruek as Chun Li!....and Edmund Chen as his father.(^_^;)

Hopefully, this will turn up better than DOA:The movie. Then again, it's Holloywood, so maybe not. :\

Remembers this...(T_T;)

Street Fighter; The Later Years

Ever wondered what happened after the Street Fighter II tournament ended? Happened to find this SF2 parody on CollegeHumor a while back as it chronicles the lives on the challengers as they try to re-organise a new tournament to make ends meet. It is a 9 part mini series, quite humourous, has a decent storyline and surprisingly high production values. Warning, a few scenes are NSFW (not safe for work) though. Street Fighter 2 fans will like this.

Part 1 Never knew Zangief can be so emo. :p
Part 2 Look out for tiger. ;)
Part 3 Acting can be a alternative profession...
Part 4 Chun Li va M. Bison. woohoo!
Part 5 For those wondering, Balrog doesn't kick in the original game. ;)
Part 6 (NFSW) Plot twist!
Part 7 He eats rats. See if you pick up for all the game quotes. ;)
Part 8 "You orientals look all alike." lol
Part 9 (NFSW)
The conclusion. Homage to SF 2 opening screen at the end. :)

Luckily the real Street Fighter II franchise hasn't fallen to this fate, with Street Fighter IV game coming out this year in the arcades and a new Movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, starring
Smallville's Kristin Kreuk (woohoo!) and Edmund Chen (yes, TCS's Edmund Chen) in 2009.

Looks like good times ahead for the Street Fighter franchise, and let's hope that the fighters
get their royalties this time round, lol. ;)

Good luck Tetra. Big Loss for SG cyber gaming scene

Last weekend I was shocked when my friend pointed out this news article to me.

"Punch dashes gamer's career dreams"
http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Story/STIStory_233439.html

(Since ST removes its articles online after 7 days, it is reprinted and discussed here in full if the original link fails.)

http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=1950677

Basically Wilson Chia (a.k.a Tetra) got banned permanently from CGS after "punching" (actually it was a slap) his manager after a game. To the masses who read the article, they will think that he lost the game, lost his cool, and punched his manager. Unfortunately this was far from the whole truth.

Unfortunately the ST article doesn't even cover much of the background story that caused this to happen. Frankly said, I have lost much confidence in the reporting integrity of ST ever since their biased coverage of the Odex "Holocaust" last year.

I personally know Wilson as a friend from the days of playing Dead or Alive Ultimate from Xbox Live a few years ago. He is a friendly, mild-mannered person, always willing to help out and teach other players to improve their skills, and later as I found out, dedicated to become a professional gamer in Singapore, no matter how harsh the conditions were. Such display of angry outburst was unthinkable to people who know him. So what caused it?

He has posted on his blog the reasons behind it.
http://tetrasg.wordpress.com/2008/05/02/end-of-my-pro-gaming-days-in-cgs/

The reason was much more political than it seems. The problem stems from the SG.Sword's team's manager, Phenic, his fiancee, and their lack of professionalism in managing the team, by putting their personal priorities over the team's goals.

Frankly said, DOA is one of the few games Singapore can stand a chance at winning, thanks to SG.Sword having a world class player like Wilson. He is one of the few that can match up to the world class level in fighting games. He is the one of the few (if not the only one) able to bring back the medals in world tournaments. Don't believe me? Try playing against him. :p

DOA is also one of the competitive games that has a smaller pool of players as compared to other games like Counterstrike. As such, Singapore stands a better chance in winning in DOA than in other games. Wilson started scouting for female DOA players early this year to participate in the CGS tournament As far as I know, he found a few that were quite good.

Unfortunately, from what I know, during the qualifying selection, the manager, Phenic, chose his fiancee for the DOA-Female participant instead of the others who were better. As far as her fiancee's skills were concerned, she was definitely not up to par as compared to the rest of the female competitors. Yet the manager still chose her, in a obvious sign of favoritism. This is likely one of the reasons of the team's lack in confidence of the manager. From Wilson's blog, it seems like her lack of interest in training during the preparation overseas (preferring to go touring with the manager, like on holiday like that) has added to Wilson's frustrations. From the comments from the CGS forums, it seems like the manager wasn't so good at managing the team either. Jeopardizing your team's chances of winning for you and your other half's convenience just seems way selfish and unprofessional for a manager to act this way. From what I read, the team tried to talk to CGS management regarding the manager's acts but the management refused to do anything about it. This got to Wilson too much, which resulted in the unfortunate slap (not punch) and his permanent ban at the CGS tournament.

In the end, whether it is a slap or punch it doesn't matter. Physical assault is a wrong way to address issues, even when it is political backstabbing. As can be seen, this only makes Wilson look like the bad guy while the manager seem like the victim. But the truth is never that simple. The ST article only scratches the surface only what is really happening behind the scenes of SG.Sword.

Another blog's response to the SG article.
http://www.euniqueflair.com/wp-trackback.php?p=1638

Why am I posting this? Because I got friends who, after reading the ST article come and tell me "You know Wilson Chia? See, play too much fighting games, cannot differentiate between virtual world and reality. " or I read comments online like "(He) So violent, so stupid." "It's just a game mah, why so serious. "

This is not just about games. It is just politics, cronyism and mismanagement, which can happen in the workplace, or anywhere else. And to aspiring professional gamers like Wilson, this was not just a game, this was their careers.

Anyway, I wish Wilson all the best in his future endeavours. It is Singapore gaming scene's loss to lose talent such as you. Keep your fighting spirit and dedication and use it to succeed somewhere else, preferring in an area where you will be more appreciated. Take care and good luck.

Xbox 360 needs more QC....

My Xbox 360 wireless controller stopped working, sigh. Firstly the 360 console died, sent for exchange several times, (on 4th console now), and now this. What is MS trying to do, force me to buy a PS3?!

Compared to their old Xbox (which is still working fine after all these years), Microsoft's current generation console technology really needs rework and more Quality Control. (Just for reference, the old Xbox was assembled in Singapore and current Xbox 360s are assembled in China, if I remember correctly) :p

Then again, heard Sony raised the price of 40GB PS3 from $559 to $599 now. Guess Sony is feeling cocky now that they won the hi-def DVD wars with blu-ray. Xbox360 (finally!) dropped to $499. Wii, using last generation's technology,... is still selling at $659. Guess that's economics for ya.

Sigh, time to go back to WoW I guess. Wait for Ninja Gaiden II to come out before I get the replacement controller.
